L drivers can speed and still pass

I flicked on the old idiot box this morning as my eyes were still adjusting to being rudely disturbed from their slumber. I can't remember which programme I was watching as I was still acclimatising to the world of wake. It was either Seven's Sunrise, Nine's Today or Ten's early morning news although I doubt it was ten.

Irrelelevant. Whatever it was, it had my attention fixed on a story that had me pondering during my drive to work. Did you know that Learner drivers can speed up to 5 times during their driving test and still score their P's?

Specifics say that they can go 5km/h over the limit 5 times during the 30 minute test and it's permissable.

I think this is weird. Not because that Learners are allowed to speed, but it's weird how speed can be cast as such an evil, vulgar and offensive act in light of everything in today's society, yet for something as pivotal as passing a new driver onto our Aussie roads, speed can all of a sudden be okay?

I'm confused. I won't make this a "speed is bad" post because I have my own thoughts on that which I won't crack open today. However this whole double standards attitude I see just dumbfounds me. So err... Is speed evil? If so why is it ok to speed if you're a newb?

I think the original report came from the Courier Mail so you can check out what I think the original writeup is over here

Speeding on L's

I can understand that some L platers might not be used to getting the speed exact, and i think speeding 2-3kms for about 5 seconds should be allowed, if its maintained, its obviously something they haven't covered during their driving lessons and need to go back and do. By 100 hours of driving, you should be able to fairly easily hold a consistant speed limit, and most people on their driving test, purposely do 5k under the limit to ensure, I personally stated it to my test instructor. To me, these new 'requirements' for obtaining a licence are disturbing, a country which constantly re-inforces the fact, speed kills, 100% of accidents are caused by speed, 100% are caused by hoons and P platers. This yet again is the government saying "we want more cars on the road, so we can make more revenue". This is a poor indication of the driver training standards in Australia. L platers need to be known to the public as Novices, yes they will make mistakes, but allowing them FIVE times to breach the speed limit, which in NSW for a P plater would add up to 20 demerit points, $450, and a disqualified licence for atleast 12 months. I personally think this is another bad judgement made by the authorities.
